Mandolin
I played mandolin as a teenager, learning on my grandfather’s mandolin that I found in my grandmother’s attic (he died when my father was four years old). An old bowl-back mandolin from the wonderful “mandolin era” in the U.S. at the turn of the 20th century. I stopped playing after college but came back to it in my late 40s after nearly 25 years. It has been a staple in my musical life since then. I play in Irish sessions when I can, enjoy some gypsy jazz and bluegrass, and founded a duo, MandoBasso, with my dear friend, jazz and classical bassist, Gunnar Biggs. We perform a lot together and have recorded two albums together. They are both available on our website www.mandobasso.com with links to streaming services and ways to buy the albums. The eponymous “MandoBasso” was recorded in 2010 and “MandoBasso: Porch Music” was recorded in 2021 on Gunnar’s porch during the second year of the pandemic. I hope you enjoy them!
Solo Mandolin:
I recently completed an album of solo mandolin called “Mandolin Alone: Quiet Day,” the first of what I plan to be a series of Mandolin Alone albums. It is a series of tunes that I have been working on for a number of years, which include acoustic solo work as well as electric mandolin with lots of fun effects and tweaking. If you get a chance to listen, let me know what you think! Below is a link to the album and liner notes.
